Junio A Football Final Ends All Square   05/09/2018

Final ends all square

Kilmacabea 0-12   Tadhg MacCárthaigh 2-6

September 2nd in Páirc Tadhg na Samhna

When Mark O’Driscoll scrambled a second goal for Tadhg MacCárthaigh’s in the 50thminute of this Rowa/Rowex junior A football final in Páirc Tadhg na Samhna, Drimoleague, on Sunday evening last it looked as if champions, Kilmacabea, were about to surrender their crown to battling underdogs MacCárthaigh’s. There’s many a slip between cup and lip and after a brilliant start which saw them leading by three points, the champions had somehow lost their way and the underdogs had fought back to level by half time, 0-4 each.

The second half belonged mostly to the Caheragh men whose two goals from attacking wing back, Mícheál O’Donovan, and full forward, Mark O’Driscoll, had them within touching distance of the Mick McCarthy Cup, which was celebrating its 20th anniversary this season. However, champions die hard and to Kilmac’s credit they staged a great comeback in the closing ten minutes, helped by the sending off of the strong Kevin O’Regan of Caheragh in the 51st minute. The closing four scores of the game went to the Kilmacs, with midfielder Daniel O’Donovan nervelessly converting a free in the 62nd minute to tie up the scores for the fourth, and last, time in the game.

A draw was probably a fair result to a game which failed to ignite in the first half, with each side managing a mere four points each as defences ruled the roost. The second half saw a huge improvement in proceedings as the intensity went up a gear and the real championship mode set in. O’Donovan’s goal for Caheragh in the 40th minute was the spark that really ignited this game and from there to the end we were treated to a thrilling contest that had the huge crowd on its toes.
