Carbery GAA News

Weather Strikes

It was bound to happen at some stage but the fine Spring weather in recent weeks had given us the false hope that we might avoid cancelling games due to bad weather. Unfortunately, the weather clerk wasn’t smiling for the start of the U.21 championships as well as the hurling leagues. Two of the three U.21B championship games were cancelled, with Bandon defeating Gabriel Rangers in the only game played, in Union Hall, on Saturday. All the hurling league games went by the wayside. The CCC will refix the U.21 championship games but it is up to the clubs to refix their cancelled league matches.

Cups and Trophies

All cups for the U.21 football championships must be returned to the Board (chairman) immediately, while all other championship and league cups and shields must be returned by the end of March. An inventory of all trophies is being undertaken this season with a view to refurbishing, repairing or replacing. The Board would be delighted with the return of missing or old trophies with a view to a future permanent museum for the Board by centenary year 2025.

New Sponsor Junior Football Championship

The Carbery Board is pleased to announce that Bandon Co-Op has come on board as the new sponsor of our Junior Football Championships. This sponsorship includes our Junior A, B, C and D football championships. We look forward to working closely with Bandon Co-op over the next few years.

We would like to thank Rowa/Rowex Pharma Bantry for their generous sponsorship over the last number of years and wish them continued success in the future.

Referees’ Course

A very informative referees’ in-service course was held in Ahamilla, Clonakilty on Wednesday, 27th , last. Kevin Walsh of Clare and Muiris Ó Súilleabháin of Kerry were the course presenters, with county referees’ co-ordinator Ger Harrington in attendance. Over twenty referees attended the course which lasted two hours and certainly gave a lot of food for thought when it came to application of the various playing rules. Creating most concern were the boot block, the handpass in football and hurling, the showing of cards (which colour?) and accidental fouls. The in-service course was due to be given in the West Lodge Hotel, Bantry, on Monday night last, March 4th, for referees on the western side of the Division.

Carbery Teams

The news is good on the Carbery teams, with both the football and hurling teams in full training for their championship games in a few weeks’ time. The footballers, under manager Tim Buckley, have been hard at it since before Christmas, playing numerous challenge games and training once a week. The response from the players has been superb. The hurlers, too, for the first time in a number of seasons, have been training hard on the astro-turf in Clonakilty, under the watchful eyes of manager, Charlie Vaughan and coach, John Paul O’Callaghan. The turn-out of players has been most encouraging and a number of challenge games have been played.

The footballers will play CIT in the championship in Brinny on Monday, March 18th, at 3pm while the hurlers will play Avondhu on Tuesday, March 26th, in Páirc Uí Rinn at 8pm. There is no second chance in the divisional section, so these games are straight knock-out. Both teams deserve good support.

Coaching News

The qualifying rounds of the Dr. Herlihy football competition, cup and plate, for First Years in secondary schools will be run off on March 14th/21st. The Cup Final, with Hamilton High School going for five in a row, will be played as a curtain raiser to the Clona Milk SW U.21A football final and the Plate Final, with St. Michael’s, Rosscarbery as defending champions, will be played as a curtain raiser to the U21 B final.
