Carbery GAA NEWS

Scór

The County finals of the Scór na bPaistí took place in Ovens last Saturday. Congratulations to two clubs in the division who were crowned County Champions. Castlehaven and Sam Maguires. Casltehaven performed their play “The Big Inspection`” and congratulations to the following who were involved Dan McCarthy, Hugh Buckley, Eamonn O Donovan, Ellen Buckley, Eabha McCarthy, EllieMcCarthy, Grace O Connell and Ailish Buckley. Congrats and well done to Muiris Buttimer, Sam Maguires, who delivered a superb recitation, filled with humour and wit.

Club Forum

The Club Forum in Páirc Uí Chaoimh on Saturday last, 9th, to discuss the new championship and league structures at county board level, drew a large crowd, with Carbery being well represented. A huge variety of ideas were discussed, showing how complex a problem the championships are at present. The strong consensus was that the new championships in 2020 should be run on a group format but the number of teams suggested for each group differed from three to six. The idea of senior A and senior B championships was well supported. Whether the championships should begin in April, as at present, or in August divided opinions. Most delegates were adamant that there were too many teams in the various championships but the idea of mass relegation in one season was not popular. The idea of phasing in the reduced numbers was recommended. Straight relegation was also strongly supported.

The Strategic Committee will now meet to discuss all the proposals and to draw up a set of definite proposals for 2020. Those proposals will be sent to the county board CCC and will then be passed on to the board executive. The finished proposals will then be put before the county board for discussion, taken back to the clubs, and then voted on at the following meeting.

The new championships and fixtures list must be in place for the 2020 season.

Lá le Pádraig

Lá le Pádraig has always had strong GAA connections with the historic Railway Cup finals taking place in Croke Park. The Railway Cups began to wane with the arrival of television and, especially, the retirement of the great Christy Ring. They were eventually replaced in recent years by the Club senior finals, but new proposals have suggested that those finals should be played instead in January. What will replace them in Croke Park on St. Patrick’s Day? We should think hard before abandoning the day to other sports.

Many GAA clubs take part in local parades on the day, which is highly commended, and we should not forget that this is also Seachtain na Gaeilge and all clubs are strongly urged to support the language in some way. We would suggest the simple following way to do it, for the whole year, replace the English officer positions with their Irish titles, at meetings and in all correspondence. So, chairperson would become ‘cathaoirleach’ (which covers both male and female); vice-chairperson becomes ‘leas-chathaoirleach’; secretary becomes ‘rúnaí’; and treasurer becomes ‘cisteoir’. When addressing the chair at a meeting, you change the word slightly to say ‘A chathaoirligh.’ If we could get all clubs in Carbery to adopt those titles it would be a great step forward in the promotion of our own language. Ní neart go cur le chéile.

Congratulations

Congratulations to the Sacred Heart Convent, Clonakilty, on winning the All-Ireland colleges junior B camogie final last Saturday, beating St. Mary’s of Midleton in the final. This win is a tremendous boost to those promoting camogie in our secondary schools in West Cork. Sacred Heart, along with St. Brogan’s, Bandon, were the winners of the Carbery GAA Monthly Award for January and officers of the Carbery Board will be visiting both schools shortly to present them with their well-earned awards.

Coaching News

At present GDA, James McCarthy, and GPO, Paudie Crowley, are collecting the names of all club Coaching Officers as communications between the clubs and the GDA and GPO can only be accepted through the Coaching Officer in the club. A small handful of clubs have yet to forward the names and are asked to do so immediately. Also, a list of names of all the coaches working, on behalf of the clubs, in the primary schools in Carbery, is being drawn up with a view to setting up a special WhatsApp group for those coaches. This will enable them to organise school blitzes, challenges etc.
