Coaching Course

There was a great turn-out at the Carbery coaching workshop in Ahamilla on Saturday last, with almost a hundred club coaches, schools’ coaches and club coaching officers in attendance. The presentations by Dr Ed Coughlan and Kevin Murray were well received as was the practical session by Murray. County rúnaí, Kevin O’Donovan, also addressed the large gathering, both male and female, and if there was one lesson to be learned from the day it was that coaches need to continuously upskill and to be prepared to share ideas and resources, no matter what the rivalry between clubs. Credit to all the coaches who attended and to organisers, Mark O’Donovan, Carbery coaching officer; James McCarthy, Carbery GDA; Paudie Crowley, Carbery GPO; and Kevin O’Callaghan, county games manager.

U.21 Final

A large crowd attended the first SW final of the year, the U.21A football final between O’Donovan Rossa and Dohenys in Castlehaven on Sunday last. The Moneyvolihane pitch was in magnificent condition for the game and the facilities top-class. A marvellous game, full of superb, hard-hitting football, ended in a welter of excitement as Rossa’s snatched the title in injury time with a last-gasp goal. Well done to Rossa’s, who upgraded to A this season after a few seasons in B, and commiserations to Dohenys who had the title snatched from them. Both teams now advance to the county championship, along with beaten semi-finalists, Carbery Rrangers and Castlehaven. A job well done, too, in a tough, sporting encounter by referee, Ian McCarthy, and his team of officials. Míle buíochas to sponsors of the U.21, Clona Milk, who have been so loyal to the Board for many seasons, and to the Farr Family, Dunmanway, who presented the Liam Farr Cup for the A championship.

The U.21B football championship is at an advanced stage, despite the cancellations due to bad weather and unplayable pitches. Bandon have again qualified for the final, where they will meet the winner of the Newcestown v Urhan semi-final.

The U.21C football competition is also well advanced. Goleen, Randal Óg and reigning champions, Tadhg MacCárthaigh, as winners in the first round, will now play off in the Cup championship, while the three beaten teams, St. Colum’s, Clann na nGael and Carbery Rangers 2, will play off for the Plate.

Dr Herlihy Cup – new winners

Hamilton High School’s attempt to win the Dr Herlihy Cup for the fifth year in a row was thwarted by Coláiste Pobail Beanntraí in a cracking final that was the curtain-raiser in Castlehaven on Sunday last. This football competition is for 1st Years in the post-primary schools in West Cork and is run off every Spring. The competition is run off in three grades, Cup, Plate and Shield according to the playing strength of each school. Schull Community College had already won the Plate and Hamilton High’s second team, the Shield. Sunday’s final provided a feast of football of a very high standard, and our thanks to all the teachers involved with the various teams. Míle buíochas, also, to James McCarthy GDA, and Paudie Crowley GPO, who organised the competition. This was Bantry’s first time winning the cup and another first was the participation of Castletownbere Community School in the Plate competition. Next season it is planned to have Macromm, Baile Mhúirne and Béal Átha’n Ghaorthaidh involved for the first time.

Junior Football Championship

Due to the cancellation of the Kilmeen v St. Oliver Plunkett’s junior A football preliminary game last weekend, owing to Carbery hurlers’ involvement in championship on Tuesday night, the Bandon Co-op junior A football championship begins this week with three games scheduled for Saturday/Sunday – Kilmeen v Plunkett’s, Tadhg MacCárthaigh v Muintir Bháire and Kilbrittain v Barryroe. See Carbery advert for times and venues.

Our best wishes, too, to the West Cork football teams involved in senior and intermediate championship action this weekend, O’Donovan Rossa, Clonakilty, Newcestown, Bandon, Dohenys, Castlehaven and Bantry Blues.

Carbery Hurlers

There was great delight at the success of the Carbery senior hurlers in the first round against Avondhu, a well-merited and hard-fought victory. That win showed that with the proper effort and support of all the clubs, there is a future for Carbery hurling. That win saw them facing county champions, Imokilly in the second round on Tuesday last and while nobody expected them to win that encounter, the players and mentors were really looking forward to the challenge of taking on the best team in the county and put in a spirted performance.

Cups

Clubs who won cups or shields last season are again reminded that all trophies must be returned immediately to the Board. Clubs, families, individuals or companies wishing to present new trophies are always welcome and should contact the runaí.
