GAELIC WRITERS' ASSOCIATION AWARDS   05/10/2014

GAELIC WRITERS' ASSOCIATION AWARDS 2014   04/10/2014
Derry’s Joe Brolly and Clare’s Anthony Daly will tonight (Friday, October 3rd) be inducted into the Hall of Fame at the 2014 Cadbury Gaelic Writers’ Association Awards at the Jackson Court Hotel in Dublin.

In addition, Seamus Hickey will be awarded the inaugural Hurling Personality of the year while Kerry’s All-Ireland winning midfielder, David Moran, will receive the equivalent football award.

This year’s PRO of the Year award goes to Tracey Kennedy of Cork while one of the country’s longest-serving GAA journalists, Michael Dundon, will be honoured with the Lifetime Achievement Award.

About this year’s GWA award winners:

Joe Brolly won an All-Ireland senior medal with Derry in 1993, Allstar awards in 1996 and 1997 while he also won two Ulster titles and four National league medals during his career. With his club Dungiven, he won two Derry county titles and one Ulster club title.

Anthony Daly captained Clare to win the All-Ireland senior hurling titles in 1995 and 1997 while he won three Munster crowns and three Allstars during his career. With his club Clarecastle he won five county titles and one Munster club championship. Since retirement, Anthony has managed the Clare senior hurlers and the Dublin senior hurlers, leading the latter to Leinster glory in 2013.

From the Murroe-Boher club, Seamus Hickey battled back from injury to help Limerick reach the Munster hurling final this year and man-of-the-match when narrowly lost in the All-Ireland semi-final against Kilkenny.

From the Kerins O'Rahilly's club, David Moran overcame serious injuries to play a huge role in Kerry's All-Ireland final win and gave a particularly memorable display in the semi-final replay against Mayo.

A native of Tipperary, Michael Dundon enjoyed a long and distinguished career with the Tipperary Star newspaper from 1963 until his retirement four years ago. As a player, Michael was a member of the successful Thurles Sarsfields sides of the late sixties and early seventies, while he co-wrote ‘Rattler’ - the very successful biography of Mickey Rattler Byrne which was published two years ago.

Tracey Kennedy is a member of the Killeagh club in East Cork and has serve as the Cork PRO PRO since December 2011. In a busy year for Cork, Tracey was always of great assistance to those covering GAA in the media.
