St Marys capture 5th Under 21 Football title   29/04/2010

A triumphant cheer from the massed ranks of St Marys’ supporters rent the Dunmanway air on Sunday last as referee Tommy Barry sounded the full time whistle to bring a dramatic Under 21 B football final to an end with their side having won on a 0-11 to 0-9 score against a gallant Tadhg MacCarthaigh that battled all the way to the finish. This latest victory gave St Marys their fifth title having already annexed the crown in 1978,’79, 2002 and ’06. However on this occasion there is the added attraction of a county series and city winners, Passage, will be our opponents when that series commences later in the summer. That scenario though seemed scarcely possible for much of the second half as despite playing against the wind, Tadhg MacCarthaigh held their interval lead of two points and looked poised to lift the crown. However in a rousing finish, augmented by seven minutes of injury time, following a bad head injury to Brian Murphy, St Marys played some sparkling football, kicked five points, conceded just one and emerged worthy winners of a thrilling contest. Following the game the Matt &Margaret O’Sullivan cup was presented to Eanna Kelleher amid scenes of unbridled jubilation as the Mary’s supporters gave vent to their emotions. This victory completes a unique treble within the last 6 months as Ahan Gaels won the minor title, the juniors capturing a first ever West Cork and now the under 21’s have completed the clean sweep. Happy days indeed. Team; Brian Corcoran; Neil Crowley, Killian McGillicuddy, Mark O’Driscoll; Neville Maybury, Eanna Kelleher, 0-2, John Daly; Jason Collins, 0-2; Kevin O’Donovan; Brian McCarthy, 0-1, Brian Murphy 0-1, Gearoid Harrington; Noel Lane, 0-1, Gary Twomey, 0-2, Michael O’Driscoll 0-2; Sub Cormac Lordan.
