Champion Gaelic Games Volunteers   30/04/2010

Attention of Carbery Board Officers I am enclosing a resume of a project that may be of interest to your divisional clubs. We will be honouring Mr. Paddy Murphy of Barryroe and the details are incorporated herein. Also on the same occasion we will be hosting a major display of historic gaelic games memorabilia in conjunction with the tribute night at Barryroe and again clubs will discover many items of interest. Champion Gaelic Games Volunteers by ScoreBoard Memories [Irl] The Concept: As we are well aware in the G.A.A. community, building super pitches and club houses, is almost the preserve of G.A.A. clubs, and many other sports codes envy the status of the G.A.A. in this matter. The men and women who run G.A.A. clubs are volunteers, who devote major time and energy to the preservation of Ireland’s national pastimes and heritage. The main codes of traditional Irish pastimes in gaelic games are hurling, gaelic football, camogie, ladies gaelic football and handball. The army of volunteers engaged in all codes is expansive throughout Ireland and since the foundation of the Gaelic Athletic Association by Michael Cusack in 1884, the everyday health of the clubs and counties, has always been a major priority. Who are Champion Volunteers? The impeccable status of G.A.A. clubs all over Ireland did not materialise overnight and of course the vision and imagination required to build state of the art pitches and club houses, required people who were aware of the major challenges they embarked upon, the huge cost factors and liabilities incurred. ScoreBoard Memories [Irl] in determining the criteria for Champion Volunteers, require certain qualifications of lengthy service, dedication and effectual involvement with a club. Most clubs have such an officer that fits comfortably into that category. A new website - www.scoreboard memories.com - currently under final preparation will incorporate Champion Volunteers amongst its web files. This website will be predominantly gaelic games orientated. Champion Volunteers Recognition! We begin with Passage West,Co. Cork and a club officer who is held in very high esteem over several decades. Mr. Ned Harrington is unchallenged in the Passage club for this award of Champion Volunteer. In the Barryroe G.A.A. club of west Cork, a prominent and distinguished club officer, Mr. Paddy Murphy, is now serving his 45 th year as club secretary. A remarkable achievement and a contender for the longest serving club secretary. Both Champion Volunteers will now have their profiles displayed on the new website and G.A..A fans all over Ireland can look forward to many more similar profiles appearing on the website. We are now seeking submissions from G.A.A. clubs around Ireland, who may wish to consider nominating a club or board officer as a Champion Gaelic Games Volunteer. Nominations for Champion G.A.A. Volunteers! We require (A) 250 Word profile of the nominee (B) Good quality photo of nominee. (See website sample) Paddy Murphy – Barryroe G.A.A. Club – Tribute Night ScoreBoard Memories [Irl] will host a Special Tribute event to honour one of the longest serving club secretaries in the history of the G.A.A. on Saturday 8 th May at 9 pm at The Grange Tavern, Lislevane, Barryroe. The popular Barryroe official became club secretary at just 17 years old and has the held that role unbroken for 45 years. He has overseen a multitude of development in his club and this tribute will recognise his outstanding contributions. A profile of Paddy can be seen on gaelic games website – www.scoreboardmemories.com and this profile will be seen by visitors to the site over many years. Many more worthy west Cork officials will come under review for similar tributes over the next twelve months. Ballinascarthy native and a member of the Passage West G.A.A. club since 1962, Ned Harrington, is also featured on this website for his remarkable dedication to his adopted club over 48 years.
