OFFICIAL OPENING OF CLONAKILTY GAA COMPLEX   03/05/2010

The official opening of the new GAA sports complex took place on Sunday May 2nd and was a wonderful occasion for the club. Following a very impressive Mass in the parish church at 10.30am, the official opening by Christy Cooney, president of the GAA took place at 1.30pm in front of a huge crowd and in perfect sunshine. A host of dignitaries from religious, political and sporting life graced the opening with their presence and following sppeches from Club Chairman, Noel O'Callaghan, chairman of the Development Committe Ger McCarthy, chairman of the Cork County Board Jerry O'Sullivan and Christy Cooney, the unveiling of the opening plaque and the cutting of the ribbon on the door by Mr. Cooney was greeted with great delight by all club members. Locals and visitors from all parts of the county, as well as many Clon exiles who had returned for the special day, then took the opportunity to view the fine facilities and to sample the food and drink available. It was a wonderful social occasion for everybody present and a great feeling of pride was evident all round. Club rúnaí John Loughnan acted as a very efficient Fear an Tí for the occasion with Mons Leonard O'Brien giving the official blessing for the complex. At 5.30pm Cork and Limerick footballers met in a special challenge game with Cork winning by 3-12 to 0-15. The Cork v Galway national hurling league final on the Big Screen and a night of music brought a wonderful day to a conclusion. The thanks of the club is due to all those who attended the opening and especially to all club members who made themselves available for stewarding on the day. There was no shortage of help. It was indeed a proud day for the Clonakilty GAA Club and now we are HOME again. Ar aghaidh linn go léir. A full account of the full weekend's celebrations will follow, especially the great wins by the senior footballers, the camogie team and the ladies football team.
